Dr Lombe Mwambwa becomes Executive Director at NOWSPAR

Dr Lombe Mwambwa has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the National Organisation for Women, Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR) in Zambia.

Lombe has a long association with the AWF and we are thrilled that she has accepted this opportunity. Though the circumstances behind her appointment are sad, we know that Lombe will follow in the footsteps of the imperious Matilda Mwaba and lead the organisation with confidence, care, and commitment.

The Chair of the Board of Trustees for NOWSPAR, Katongo Bwalya Moonga, said the Board “believes Dr Mwambwa’s history with NOWSPAR, commitment to learning and innovation and unique mix of skills and leadership qualities position her for success in leading our organization forward”. Lombe’s recent roles within NOWSPAR include leading its international partnerships as Special Adviser, as a Board Member, and her current role as Acting Executive Director.

Lombe’s connection with the AWF began in 2013 when she visited the University of Chichester as a visiting scholar. She played a key role in the establishment of the Women’s Sport Leadership Academy (WSLA) and, soon after, successfully applied for a doctoral scholarship at the University. Whilst completing her doctorate, Lombe was instrumental in helping the AWF to advance and is currently our International Advisor and a Strategy Group member.

In December 2020, Lombe was awarded her PhD for her study on the experiences of Women Leaders in the African Union Sports Council Region 5. Her knowledge of these lived experiences, as well as her advocacy work, stands her in great stead to be able to push forward the advocacy for women and girls in Zambia and beyond. We are very proud to see her continued development.
