Anita nominated for prestigious Sunday Times Award

AWF co-founder Dr Anita White OBE has been nominated for the Sunday Times SportsWomen of the Year (SWOTY) Changemaker Award. The Award celebrates those who have inspired others and used their platforms to create change. Our other co-founder, Professor Elizabeth Pike, had the following to say about the announcement:

"I am absolutely delighted that Anita has been nominated for the SWOTY Changemaker Award. This nomination recognises her unparalleled contribution to making a difference for women and girls in and through sport. Anita was the thought-leader behind the Brighton Declaration, which outlines a series of principles for gender equity and has been signed by more than 600 organisations across the globe. She is the founder of the International Working Group on Women and Sport, Women in Sport UK, and the AWF, organisations that have inspired others to progress gender equity initiatives. In particular, the Women’s Sport Leadership Academy has now seen more than 360 women leaders representing 62 countries graduate and progress to advancing gender equity for sport in their regions.

In keeping with her feminist principles, Anita has always worked in partnership with others in her multiple leadership roles, as Director of the Sports Council, Chair of the IWG and Women in Sport, President of GB Hockey and captain of the world-cup winning England Hockey team. She is the only person to have been explicitly honoured for her services to women and sport, with the award of her OBE in 2005. Anita’s career has the unique blend of being a world-class scholar, activist, athlete, coach and mentor, in each role inspiring and supporting others to make a positive impact on the world of women and sport. Those of us with whom she has worked, and those who follow in her footsteps, owe her a huge debt of gratitude for paving the way for us, and this nomination is well-deserved recognition of an outstanding changemaker." Press here to be taken to the SWOTY Awards page and vote for Anita. Thank you.
