Our History

The AWF was launched in 2011 at the University of Chichester, UK. It comprised a Fund to support women leaders and scholars who faced challenges in particular areas of the world and an Archive of materials about the Women and Sport Movement. Between 2011-2016, we hosted events and seminar series attended by students, AWF guests and supporters and members of the local community. Presenters included London 2012 Olympians and Paralympians, Gamesmakers, sports scientists, scholars and sports experts. Aside from the growth of WSLA and research, one of our major projects was supporting female community sport leaders across Tanzania.

Women’s Leadership Development in Tanzania

Between 2012-2016, we supported the Tanzanian National Sports Council (NSC) to retain three female community sport leaders across the country to develop sustainable sports participation opportunities for women and develop their own leadership training and mentorship.
